Hey RWPTT,
I know this issue to well and I have faced it myself and many players I work with. I think ultimately what happens is you see the ball sit up high and its easy to naturally play really hard on it to win the point, but then it dives into the net like you have said. Its a combination of not going for to much power and hitting the ball to hard and still brushing up and spinning on the ball when it sits up like this. Have you seen this video? https://tabletennisdailyacademy.com/videos/how-to-kill-high-short-balls-effectively/ This video is when there isnt much backspin on the ball. What you want to do is spin this high short backspin ball and then go for the attack on the follow up shot.

If you are finding the ball is going into the net, open the bat angle a bit more and go for more spin rather then speed. On this speed shot aim for your opponents cross over point (play the ball to their playing elbow), this will set you up for a weaker return by the opponent to attack easier.
You have mentioned you are a B’H oriented player, it could be worth you working on your forehand in practice. Working on the forehand pivot will help you attack these lose high balls to with your forehand and give you more attacking options.
Lastly, when playing the backhand on a high ball its important to step in with your right leg when attacking the short high ball over the table. If you are stretching its hard to get the right contact.
Hope this helps 🙂
