Answer for Too Wristy

Hi Bpenda,

You sound like a very sporty person, welcome to table tennis! Firstly it’s great you have got yourself a coach and had a few lessons already.

There are some players out there who have very effective forehand topspins with a cocked wrist. What I would suggest is don’t worry to much about getting your wrist to straight, a slight bend is good and helps with the spin contact.

I think right now table time is key. Try and spend a lot of the time on the table practicing the basics as you have mentioned. Practice doing 10 forehand topspins in a row and increase the consistency over time. You also may have your elbow to close to your body which is causing the cocked wrist, keep some distance between your elbow and body during the stroke.

If you are able to send us in a video of you doing the stroke that would be great.

Thanks Bpena,
Dan
