changing-the-grip
Hi guys,
want to get your opinion on changing grip which means to change position of fingers when doing different shots (index finger, thump finger) for me as I’m intermediate player with classic technique I do no changes, but noticed that some players with higher level changing it while playing. is it necessary and could you get more confidence when for example moving index finger more to center of the racket on forehand flicks and receiving or thumb finger on backhand topspin etc
Hey xxx, the answer to this one is very individual and depends a lot on what you are comfortable with, lots of players have different grips and sometimes different grips on certain shots. To be honest it’s just how you personally feel comfortable, some shots like the backhand block you may find easier to have the thumb higher or the index finder higher for flicks as you said but overall I think if you can keep a consistent grip its more balanced and you don’t have to over think then.
So experiment to see what feels comfortable with you but the different grips won’t hold you back from improving, find what is comfortable for you and stick to it 🙂
agree with you Tom, no doubt – every table tennis player has its own technique no matter high or low level, but sometimes when I see those things on higher level makes me wonder it could be really helpful just when your technique is already very good and you add those tricks to your game correctly and use it wisely
I know what you mean, on certain shots yes like the backhand block and topspin can be slightly adapted compared to the forehand side to make things easier. I just wouldn’t over think too much about the grip, if you don’t feel like it’s limiting you then you should be fine. Try to use the finger higher on flicks and see if that helps, I think my finger definitely goes higher for those shots but overall sounds like you are quite comfortable.
yes, I’m sure that classical grip I use is very comfortable for everybody;) but the wish to become better player makes me be more attentive and every such thing is worth discussion=))
