I totally know what you mean. So basically when you’re in the rally in topspin play keeping the bat high helps massively in exchanging from backhand to forehand quickly and making great use of your rotation. It also helps with your recovery and going forward into the ball. Now, when playing against backspin, you for sure need to keep the bat lower so you can come up and forward into the ball. So this is probably the reason why he said this, for open rally play.
