Info about a blade

Hi Tom,
I am looking to buy andro gauzy sl off blade. I am looking to buy it because I just love the way it looks and just wanted to spoil myself :-). Have you tried it? It is an ebony outer layer 7 ply all wood blade. My concerns are that I am using a inner carbon limba outer ply long 5 blade and fear that would these blades be too different? I am looking to pair them with my current rubbers which is andro R53. Please let me know if u have info about this blade.

Hi Singhpong, yes I’ve actually recently tried the Gauzy sl off blade as it happens! I currently use an all wood blade and I really like the Gauzy blade to be honest, it has a really nice feel and control but at the same time enough speed.
It would work well with the r53 rubbers thats for sure, we tested it with those and it was a good combination. Of course it will be a change from your current inner carbon blade and will need some time to adjust, but in my opinion you’ll find it not a huge change although a different feeling. Of course everyone is different abd likes different things but from my personal perspective I really like the blade as I’m used to all wood blades 🙂

Thanks for you reply. Did the rubber feel too hard and stiff cz they use ebony? And was it comfortable to loop backspin even with R53 on it?
Sorry i meant if the blade felt too hard and stiff not the rubber lol. Cz i am currently playing with limba outer blade.
No I didn’t find it too hard and stiff to be honest, even with it being ebony and the rubbers are fairly hard. Comfortable to loop against backspin for me, again of course everyone likes different things and I’m used to a stiff all wood blade. Nevertheless I doubt you’d find many problems getting used to it and being able to play against backspin.

Hey Tom,
Does adding more thin layers of glue on rubber and blade give more control, feeling, speed and spin too? Like is there benefit to using 3 or 4 thin layers of glue on rubber and 2 layers on the blade? Or is it not true? Would love to view your thoughts on glueing.
Hey Singhpong, the glue layers do make a slight difference to the feeling of the blade bit it is pretty minimal to be honest. I always put 2 layers of glue on the rubbers as the first layer can be soaked up by the rubbers. Then just one good layer on the blade, however with some very watery glues you may need 3 or 4 layers on the rubbers. That is more to do with getting a good stick than the feeling of the bat though.
Adding more glue layers can make the bat feel slightly more springy as of course with more glue you feel the blade slightly less. However as I said it’s very minimal really and not much of a difference. In my opinion as long as you can get them to stick well and you glue in a way which is consistent and the same each time then that’s the most important thing 🙂

Hey Tom,
Is there any advantage to having a blade with a bigger headsize. I heard that bigger headsize gives more feeling and dwell. Do 3 or 4 extra mm of headsize have any considerable difference? Moreover, i heard that older blades are better as they have more feeling. Is that true that the blade gets better as it gets older? One more thing that if I dont break my blade can i keep using it for 5-10 years or does it slow down like rubbers? Sorry lots of questions but I am just very curious about equipment these days 😉
Hey Singhpong, I wouldn’t say that a bigger headsize on the blade makes much difference to the feeling and dwell. A blades feeling will certainly change as it gets older, they become softer, less stiff and slightly slower over time. I would change a blade probably after 5-10 years as you will definitely notice a difference with the speed compared to a new one
