Hi Graham, yes that’s right, sorry I read it back and realised I didn’t word it very well, but that’s exactly it as you described there. For the backswing definitely start the backswing as you are moving into position, this will save time and make you feel less rushed and also give you the ability to make last minute adjustments a bit more easily as well.  
And in terms of the technique, I would say it’s a combination of the 2 things you mentioned, so extending the arm back/down and also rotating the body a little more to help. It might sound like a lot but I think even a small amount in these areas will help your forehand a lot!
