Coach CornerMatch playBackhand topspin technique
Gabriel Kozakevych asked 6 days ago

Hi i have generally a question about my Backhand topspin technique so i Had some Coaches they thought me that i should use Rotation in my Backhand topspin to create more Power in the backhand but i See this way i can Not really react to fast Returns on the table or even from mid distance If my opponent Plays a fast return Back. So i feel like i need a shorter stroke in my Backhand topspin to really have Control and also having this way max Speed and spin in my Backhand topspin. The Thing Is what i really do notice in my Backhand topspin If the stroke IS short beginning from the middle of my Body i do notice that i Lack Speed and spin so i am using my forearm and my wrist get used at the contact of the ball. The thing Is i looked Up to some Videos really to improve my short Backhand stroke Like trying to do the backhand topspin with a short stroke live ovchatrov for example but i See i still Lack Spin and Speed because i Just Beginn using my forearm and at the contact i am using my wrist. So i thought that likely the only way to really have a relaiable Method with a short stroke to get a very fast and spinny Backhand IS by using the Same technique or similar AS Liam Pitchford because i also saw just with little effort because of His late whipping Motion i mean He IS using delayed wrist whipping Motion that this Is the only Method to create max quality for a Backhand topspin for a Club Player with a short Backhand stroke because really Not important what i am trying else with a short Backhand stroke i feel i either Lack Spin or Speed and i by myself Not understand how its possible with a short Backhand stroke to create Speed and spin without this delayed whip that Liam pitchford use so for all other Professional table Tennis Players i feel Like they Just practice there Backhand topspin with perfect Timing and also max perfect use of every muscle. So i think as a Club Player with a short stroke and Not Elite practice i can only use Backhand topspin of Liam ?

Hey Gabriel, It’s always important to find what works for you because everyone is different, the way Liam does his backhand with a lot of wrist and a whipping action can be very effective for sure and generate a lot of speed and spin without too much body rotation which can help players. It’s good to have a short stoke for sure as you ca recover quicker and rush the opponents which is key in the modern game. So I think if you find this type of technique comfortable keep working at it and of course look over the videos on the Masterclass we have on the Academy with Liam and this will help you keep improving this style of backhand too.
