Answer for Backhand Topspin

Hi Pat,

It’s always good to really get back to basics on shots when you feel they aren’t consistent, so you’re doing the right thing. Overall you backhand technique is clearly pretty solid and it’s not big changes that need to be made. I feel all three versions you have talked about and shown here, none of them are necessarily right or wrong but all have their place in different situations. For example the 3rd one you demonstrated would be really effective when there is a lot of topspin on the ball and you need to counteract it by getting over the top more. You may find it easier to pick up backspin by using your 2nd version as you can use this bat angle change with the wrist to brush around the ball and get the topspin.

So the main thing for your general backhand topspin shots is finding the way you personally feel most comfortable, I’d say in terms of simplicity that would probably be the first version you showed and talked about. In terms of technique I think they all look good, however one thing that will really help you straight away is your timing. You tend to take the ball very early off the bounce which can cause it to be inconsistent, so really try to wait for the ball and let it come up to the top of the bounce, you’ll feel as if you have more time and be less rushed straight away.

Try to focus on getting the contact a little closer to your body, this links to the timing and will add to the control and stability. Lastly I would say also try to really think about keeping a loose and relaxed arm and letting the bat do the work, this again will help you feel more controlled and relaxed. I would say for now even those small changes you’d feel a big difference on all 3 versions here. Any questions on what I’ve mentioned here just let me know.

Cheers, Tom
