Hey PMC, yes there can be wuote a lot of contradictory information from various sources online and it can obviously cause confusion on which is the correct way to do things. I feel quite often it’s not necessarily black and white and certain elements of what coaches are correct and others maybe not so.
So first just quickly on the weight transfer in backhand that the coach online mentioned, I agree with you in that its a bit old school as the backhand nowadays is similar to the forehand stance and power is created from the body, and correct arm and wrist acceleration rather than weight transfer as such.
When it comes to movement in and out from the table we will definitely be adding a detailed video on this when we can get back to proper filming. I would say with side to side movement there are some keys to get right and this is less crucial on the in and out movement. Quite often there are different philosophies and ways to do things that people feel are correct. Usually in this situation it comes down to personal feel and being comfortable and confident in the way you do things. I tend to lean towards EmRat Thich in this situation as I don’t like players putting their right foot forward to o
Play backhand shot as this can cause a lot of problems. I would say always try to keep your right slightly behind the left or at least square to the table which can be done using EmRat Thich method. I believe this keeps you in the best body position to play both backhand and forehand well.
The part I do agree with on Joze’s video is when he talks about moving in when the ball is dropping low, demonstrates this nicely at about 4 minutes, keeping his right foot behind by moving the left foot first. This is so you can lift the ball and generate body rotation.
So you can take elements of both but in the main I would focus on the more simple method EmRat Thich shows with keeping the feet fairly level by always using the right foot to lead, I feel the other method from Joze can be done but is a little more confusing and arkward.
I hope that’s helpful and not more confusing for you! Any questions on it just comment back to me in here.
Cheers, Tom
