Hey I would say that it does depend on each individual rubber, softer sponge doesn’t always mean a higher throw and harder sponge the same. Generally players are all using harder rubbers nowadays because of the plastic ball, harder rubbers usually are slightly more direct with the throw angle but often compensate by having a more grippy surface so the throw angle is still enough.
I would say it’s all about what you individually find comfortable, if the sponge is too soft it’s harder to generate power and hit aggressive shots but a bit easier to control the ball and create spin. Harder rubbers and more direct and sometimes harder to control because of this.
Also because harder rubbers spring off the bat faster it can seem like the throw angle is higher as well. And that is probably what you found when doing your testing.
