Hey Deep, table tennis can be a strange and frustrating sport at times, and some things seem to happen like this for no particular reason. I think from what you’ve said though you are absolutely right that it is a timing problem on your backhand. Actually long term this could work out well for you if you can keep your new confidence on the forehand and get back to how your backhand was before.
So I would say the main things to correct this and get the timing and consistency back are to make sure you are contacting the ball close to you body and not reaching out and hitting it too far away and too early. This is a common thing that can cause you to miss the ball or hit the edge of the bat as you mentioned above. The next thing is to try to stay relaxed in the stroke with a smooth action and not to jerk at the ball, also making sure to stay low and with your body weight forward.
In terms of drills to do, I would keep things very simple and do plenty of regular consistency drills, even just lots of backhand to backhand playing your topspin against a block and really working on the consistency. Also lots of the backhand open up and then the follow up shot as these are often the most important ones in match play. Lastly I would say don’t over think it too much, I’m very sure after a bit of focus on this and some more practice time you will get your backhand back to as it was before, sometimes after a break these things can happen but long term you will improve a lot by coming through it and then understanding in the future how to correct it if it does happen. Let us know how you get on! 🙂
