Hi James, this is great thanks for sending in the video! Ok so the first thing I notice is that quite a few times you actually attacked pretty well on your first shot with your forehand, however it’s the recovery and the next couple of shots that end up making you drop back from the table a bit. I think this happens because sometimes when you attack with your forehand your right foot comes forward and gets stuck in front so often the next shot you are out of position and have to block the next shot with your backhand.
To be honest your first forehand attack is pretty strong so it’s just working on staying compact and recovering quickly, on your backhand you tend to push a lot more and I feel if you could get confident even to do a controlled slow spin up you’d see results improve. Pushing 1 or 2 is ok but ideally after that you want to open up the rally with a topspin and get on the front foot rather than getting stuck in a pushing rally. So I’d definitely spend time getting more confident with the backhand open up, we’ve got a video on here on that.
Another thing I notice is that you serving game seems quite strong but sometimes after the serve or return you become a bit upright and that can make you lose balance, so really try to stay low and keep your body weight forward which will make blocking the ball when your opponent attacks much easier.
I hope that helps and there’s a few things there to focus on I would say but with a bit of work you’ve got strong basics and you can improve a lot for sure! Let us know If you have any other specific questions or of course any more videos you’d like us to look at .
Cheers, Tom
