Hey! So this is a difficult one for sure because obviously the return you do depends on the type of serve/spin. So of course getting better at reading spin and spotting the type of serve will be the biggest help. But there are still a few good habits you can do if you aren’t sure of the spin. The first one may sound stupid and simple but it’s aiming for the centre line of the table, this will help avoid any sidespin in either direction take the ball off the side, it gives you the best chance of getting the return on when you can’t see which way the spin will go.
The next tip is to really try to be decisive with your returns, often when players care not sure of the spin they end up not really choosing a shot and sticking to it, so they might half go for a push then topspin it for example. Even if you make the wrong choice it’s good to really pick your shot and stick to it, this will help you learn as well and spot when it was the right or wrong return. Lastly is try to avoid rushing when returning , take your time and slow down, this takes practice but will really help.
We also have this video which I think will help a lot so give this a watch:
I hope this helps! 🙂
