Hi Dan and Tom. What do you think of dropping the bat shoulder for extra spin and pace on the backhand topspin? So you stay square with the legs and hips but coil more with the torso and finish square to the table. Do you think consistency would suffer too much? Thanks.

Hi Slidepong,

Good question, its good that you are experimenting. Some players find dropping the shoulder more helps with their backhand topspin, take Kreanga for example. Whereas some players like TImo stay more level with the shoulders. See what works for you, I wouldn’t suggest over forcing your right shoulder and keeping your shot as simple as possible. Losing out on speed for control and consistency is much better in my opinion. Using your hips and legs is very important and the pivot from your elbow with the forearm and wrist.
