Coach CornerTechniquesForehand Topspin development
Nomad asked 2 years ago

https://youtu.be/PCRV2Z8XvrE Hi  Guys Now that we have moved into the Ist division I am puting in some practice into develoiping a stronger forehand topspin from further back from the table with the emphasis on developing more spin by using my wrist.  I have attached a short video to show the stage I have reached at the moment. Just before I contact the ball I bend my wrist back slightly before brushing over the top of the ball with speed. This gives me more spin and a bigger arc which causes the ball to land deeper on the opponent\’s side of the table, but timing is tricky as I take a slight pause before contacting the ball.  In a fast counter topspin rally I think I would  have to move further back from the table and extend my follow through just above the head (depending on the force of the opponent\’s topspin) Let me know what you think. Hi Alex,

This is looking good, I would just focus mainly on having a solid base and making sure you keep your feet on the ground during the contact, this will mean you can use better weight transfer and be more efficient. You’ll also be able to keep your arm more relaxed. This shot has already improved a lot so keep up the good work though, much more rotation in the body and and snap in the elbow, I can also see you are getting more spin by focusing on the wrist, if you get a nice loose arm and relaxed grip this will continue improving I have no doubt!

Hi Tom
I will try to put the the points you have raised into practice and hopefully the next video should see further improvements.
My ultimate aim is to develop much faster topspin but also, when appropriate, slower, heavy topspin, to land deeper in the opponent’s side of the table in an effort to change pace and direction. Relaxing my arm with a more flexible wrist action should help to prevent tension… My footwork will also need to improve…a work in progress!

Thanks again

Alex

Point the left knee more to the right on the backswing. Explode off the ground from the left foot to rotate fast. Better body work means you can relax more on the swing.
