Coach CornerTechniquesForehand topspin (practicing alone)
darion888 asked 2 years ago

Hello,
since it’s not always possible to go to the club and train. Is there any way to practice forehand topspin shots at home on your own if you don’t have any partner or a robot (of course I’ve got a table tennis table in the garage)? With backhand shots or even forehand flick I do not struggle to simply toss the ball up and then to strike a shot. But unforntuately I can’t do it so easily with forehand topspin shots – seems like fluidity is lacking and technique suffers since it’s not a comfortable position for me to toss the ball, move back and then to strike a shot.

Hi,
Great question. Shadow play without the ball is often useful in these circumstances. Always imagine the ball, where you want to contact, and the timing of the shot.
If you want to practice making a good contact. You could try putting a ball on top of a bottle and brushing the ball off. Maybe weigh down the bottle somehow.
Also, you could some research on visualization/mental rehearsal. It can be really effective when you having got the option of playing. Perhaps we will put a video out on this in the future.
Happy training
Dan
