I recently had terrible trouble returning fast sidespin services to my backhand either losing the point directly or giving a weak return which he looped hard, Another guy had a slower sidespin serve but very spinny which I struggled to get on the table he also followed up with a spinny loop.

Hi Chelseasyd,

The best way to return these fast sidespin serves is to try to play a positive backhand topspin shot, if you return to carefully with these the ball can go back to weak or even miss. So try to give yourself a bit of space form the table and brush through the return well going for spin with a relaced grip is also important to get a soft contact on the ball.

For the slower sidespin ones, I guess they were coming a bit shorter in the table. So you may have to push these, if you do its about adjusting your bat angle to keep it low and coming more around the side of the ball. Definitely take a look at the video on the Academy at returning short sidespin serves here- https://tabletennisdailyacademy.com/videos/returning-short-heavy-sidespin-serves/

Hope this gets you returning these serves better!
