Hi Tom and Dan, I was told from an ITTF level 3 coach that your racket should never go below the table, even when you play a loop, but I see professionals and other players do this all the time. I understand the professional level is very different and to not follow to closely. I know you want to reduce your backswing but would you be able to elaborate more on why he said this?

Hi Liberate,
I totally know what you mean. So basically when you’re in the rally in topspin play keeping the bat high helps massively in exchanging from backhand to forehand quickly and making great use of your rotation. It also helps with your recovery and going forward into the ball. Now, when playing against backspin, you for sure need to keep the bat lower so you can come up and forward into the ball. So this is probably the reason why he said this, for open rally play.
