Coach CornerTechniquesPlaying against short pimps on 1 side and smooth rubber on the other
Nomad asked 2 years ago

Hi Guys
Our team is currently leading the league table but will soon be playing against a team which has 2 members who play with short pimples on one side (backhand) and normal fast rubber on the other (forehand)
The last time I played against them I found it difficult to maintain a constant attack on either forehand or backhand as any fast topspin was blocked (reversing)  and came ‘floating’ back deep on the table with backspin from the pimples.  On the occasions when my attacking stroke was slower {due to my cautious return of the ball from the pimples) my opponent had time to ‘run round’ the backhand and play a fierce topspin drive on the forehand.  Applying more topspin simply meant that the ball came back with more backspin when blocked on their backhand and so I had to resort to an aggressive push and wait  for another opportunity to attack.
When I tried to attack a return from the pimples using the same angle used in the topspin drive, the ball fell into the net.  I just managed to win the game by varying my return from the forehand to backhand but found it a struggle.
Do you have any advice on how to keep the attack going from the short pimples e.g opening the bat angle with a more forward and faster elbow/forearm action to give a flatter and faster return and so keep the initiative or is there another strategy I could use?
Any advice would be welcome.

Hey Nomad

Nothing like a good battle against pimples.

Short pips will generally not have too much of a reversing effect on the spin and you can treat them almost as if they are smooth. Make sure you are watching the ball closely (there may not be as much spin as you think) and mix the spins. Variation is your friend!

If they are looking to turn the corner and get their forehand in, use that to you advantage. Get them in the crossover making them play a weak shot and play into the space. Don’t let them settle too much in the backhand corner.

Good luck with the match!
