Coach CornerTechniquesupdate-on-reverse-pendulum-serve

Hi Dan
I have now made a few adjustments to this serve  based on the advice you gave and further reference to your video.  The first thing I noticed was that from the start posiiton your arm was extended so the ball was held near the centre of the table but when you tossed the ball the contact point was close to your body (for better control), To do this the angle of the toss was not vertcal but had to be more like 30 degrees from vertical allowing your body to rotate more easily. The starting position of your bat was about a foot above the ball and the height of the toss (which started just before the bat moved into the backswing) was between 2 and a half to 3 feet.
These adjustmens gave me time to make the slight pause you mentioned before contacting the ball as it dropped and also use the forearm and wrist to add spin on follow through.
I used this service against a fellow club player who said that the ball seemed to ‘hesitate’ then kick viciously away to his forehand side which causing the ball to pop up and so made it easy to finish the point with a forehand topspin or smash.
Thanks again Dan for the advice. I am now working on the various placements of the same serve for variety, including one which lands on the backhand of the opponent’s side of the table (as a right hander).
Will keep you updated.

Hi Alex, your welcome, we love it whe we can help people progress and improve so it’s great to hear youve been able to make sime changes and improvements already to the serve!

A lot of what you mentioned above are the small details that will help continue improving the serve,so its brilliant you are able to analyse in depth and keep working on them and you will see the benefits for sure.
