When to use backhand topspin and when to backhand punch what about high backspin

I have been practicing this combination on my robot. My take on this before you get real expert advice is to use the punch for a higher ball closer to the table against topspin and the topspin backhand for a lower ball when a bit more away from the table. The hiromoto type punch can be done off the bounce but it is a higher risk shot. It is a high risk very high reward shot. For a high backspin ball you need to get very low using legs and bend from the waist to topspin.

Thanks, that helps me get mentally prepared to watch my opponents replies like a hawk, There’s no time to hesitate in TT. I like to be aggressive, but also smart.

HI Slicepong,

Hope all is well. Already some good answers here.

My take on this which we will make a video on this very soon. Firstly the backhand punch. It is best to time this shot when the ball has come short over the table and in front of you. You can step in and use the punch shot. Also, if the ball has come up higher than the net height you can punch through usually on these short balls. It is also possible to backhand punch deep balls but its a bit more higher risk and this is where the backhand topspin comes into to give you safety, arc and spin in your stroke to make the shot reliable.

If the ball comes through high with backspin, you want to take your time, don’t rush into the shot. You want to backhand topspin this ball, bend your knees, bring the bat below the ball and brush into the ball at the top of the bounce going forward with good wrist speed. Multi ball is a good way to practice this whereby the feeder gives you lots of variations to your backhand.

Hope this helps. A video will be made on this specific area soon 🙂
