Forehand down the line
Hi Tom and Dan,
I have a challenge with hitting forehands down the line. I have been working on feeling the ball and cross court hitting topspin is easy, but I struggle with down the line. What do I need to do to make this shot- open up more, let the ball come back further? Thanks.
Hey Bobv,
Great to hear from you. Really good that you are working on feeling the ball. Playing down the line is a shot we find many players struggle with but once practiced will be a breeze. Okay so heres the thing, if you are to square on to the table it is hard to make the right contact. Check out this video here from 3.33: https://tabletennisdailyacademy.com/videos/using-the-lines/
Notice how my right foot is more behind than my left. This allows me to rotate and finish my shot in the direction of playing down the line. With your timing point you want to take it at the top of the bounce in front of your body. Try not to take the ball late because then it can be very tricky and hard to play the line shot.
Hope this helps and give this a go 🙂
Dan
Wonderful and thank you. You cant imagine how useful this all is. I played last night at what I would call 1/2 speed but working on spinning and feeling the ball, and it was much more effective and fun.
That’s fantastic to hear! Keep up the great work, really good you are applying what you’re learning to games to. That’s key!
