Coach CornerServe and ReceiveBackspin pendulum serve help
Twiddle_TV asked 3 years ago

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong but most of the time I don’t feel like I’m getting any backspin on my pendulum serve. It’s either side/top or just side spin. Any advice would be great!

Hey Adam! I know a few people we coach have the same problem where they can get the topspin but not the backspin pendulum. Just had a look at your video, the main thing I see to help you get backspin is the bat angle on contact. So you want to try and flatten the bat angle so you can get more under the ball as you contact. If the head of the bat drops it means you’ll get around the side more which will be more topspin/sidespin. So right at the tip of the bat you want to try and keep this up slightly and don’t let it drop down as you strike the ball, that will help for sure. Also trying to finish in a more downwards motion towards the table will really help too. With those 2 things to focus on see if you feel you are able to get more backspin and let us know how it goes. I think that will make a big difference just thinking about those 2 elements when serving.

Also definitely have a look at our “Ghost serve” video on YouTube which looks at how to get a pure backspin serve. You will be able to take the parts from that and incorporate it into your pendulum to get more backspin.

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks for the response Dan! I watched the Ghost Serve video and it was super helpful. I gave the Backspin Pendulum serve another shot today. Let me know what you think! Cheers.
