Coach CornerChoosing a playing style
darion888 asked 1 year ago

Hi guys, I’m rather an offensive player who plays with quite quick equipment. Blade: Tibhar VS Unlimited, forehand: friendship battle II (more chinese forehand technique with fuller arm swing), backhand: tibhar evolution mx-p (all max).  I prefer playing with either spin or hitting hard, staying mostly mid-distance from the table. I’m quite agile and quick so I can follow this style of playing. But although I’m mostly successful with this style I’m sometimes worried that when I play quick, the ball will comes back quicker after a block so I couldn’t catch up with. But on the other hand, when I play slower, controlled shots, the opponents put me under pressure often then because they use a weaker ball. So the question is which way to follow in the long run?

Hey! I think it’s important to have a balance of both these styles you mentioned, there will be times when you can play fast and with spin and sometimes you will need to slow down and go for more control. It depends on who you are playing and the style the use as well. So I would say to keep both styles as part of your game, of course the goal is to play fast and aggressive when you can but maybe it’s just now for you important to focus on the placement of these fast shots and making it difficult for players to block back fast as you said.

So trying to play into the body and crossover or very wide angles to stop the fast blocks causing you problems!

Yeah, thanks for the answer, it makes sense to me. Normally when I play slower, controlled shots a lot of them is placed correctly on the table during warm-ups and matches. But as I said before controlled, slower shots can make the opponents take initiative and put me under pressure. So that’s why I’m thinking about speeding up a little bit. I also found that harder spinful shots are more difficult for the opponents to counter or block during rallies since I can produce some kicking effect. But generally as you said the mixture and variety of shots and change of pace is very important :).
