Coach CornerForehand topspin and forehand topspin against backspin (video analaysis)
darion888 asked 2 years ago

Hello guys,
Even though my backhand is quite good and I’ve achieved some table tennis level (playing in the local league second season). I’ve been struggling for such a long time with my forehand topspin (especially against backspin). I practice shadow play regularly and even on ball training tool (to train the feeling of the ball  – brushing). I can show then my movements correct. But when it comes to training or match I tend to make shots which are not technically correct (still slightly better than in the past).  Seems like I was taught forehand incorrect in the past and got some bad habits which are not easy to eradicate. In the links below I share with you two of my videos (to judge and give some tips how and what to improve).

Take care! 🙂

Hey
There are 2 points I can help you with.
1. Aim for your contact point to be more in front of you chest. Currently it is nearly to the side of you where you will have less control.
2. At the moment your whole arm is moving from your shoulder. Try to focus the brush into the lower arm. Snap from the elbow down into the contact.
Let us know how it goes. Keep up the good work!

Thanx Dan I found your tips very useful :P. I think the main problem was holding the elbow too squeezed – too near the body. I also did not snap the ball from the elbow – using too much body transfer instead. With forehand shot against backspin although I can shadowplay it correctly. Then when it comes to real contact with the ball I tried to play it safe coming back to old bad patterns which do not work and looked bad. I try to be stubborn now and even if I missed the shot I want new patterns to become my second nature. By the way eradicating bad habits it’s a really hard process but I believe that it will pay in the future :).

You need to relax your wrist arm and shoulder. Let the body rotation move the relaxed arm. You will get a faster arm speed and play with a lot less effort.
