Coach Cornergetting-more-relaxed
Andreas Resch asked 1 year ago

Hey Guys,
Doing a Sport that requires a lot of body tension for decades has made me stiff when it comes to table tennis.
what can I do to get way more relaxed? Things I want to try now are:
– 30/60/90 drills
– spin over speed (as Dan already suggested)

– I switched to a slower blade (Donic new Impuls 7,5 to Tibhar IV-S)
– Here is an additional idea I had, why not try to play at a slow pace and make it a priority to keep the rally’s going as long as possible. Off course both partners need to have that as an objective.

what do you think, anything I am missing? Are there better ways? Oh and I guess being more relaxed will reduce my still horrible error rate at the same time 😅.

thx!

Hey Andreas, being more relaxed will absolutely reduce your error rate in the long run for sure! I think the things you have mentioned above will all help, especially doing lots of drills where you focus purely on consistency and playing nice smooth controlled shots. Playing a slow pace is great and focusing on spin and brushing the ball well, this improves control and feel on the shots and will help you be more relaxed too.

Always try to think spin over speed as well in all the shots you do, but you are doing the right things, maybe just see how it goes with the slower blade, sometimes it’s easier to actually be more relaxed with a faster blade. But that is a matter of personal taste with the equipment and what you feel comfortable with of course!

Tom 🙂
