Coach CornerTechniquesHelp analyse my FH and BH topspin (video attached)
Salexander asked 4 years ago

Hi Tom and Dan,

Here is a video of me doing forehand and backhand topspins: https://youtu.be/wwzFD6OtCzg

I’m much more confident with my forehand. If I try to hit harder with my backhand I tend to overshoot or clip the net (also my BH looks like I’m doing ballerina moves ?). I also noticed the my recovery and footwork is quite slow and need some work. Could you please analyse my video to see which areas I should improve on and how can I improve?

To add context, I just started playing table tennis earlier this year with my housemates. Because of COVID we decided to buy a table tennis table and we learn from tabletennisdaily and some other YouTube channels. We are all relatively new, but we are already addicted to table tennis ?.

Cheers,
Samy

Hey Samy, I don’t think your ballerina moves loo bad at all, with some small changes I think you can build confidence with your backhand 🙂 I’m really impressed with your level after only having started earlier this year!

I think on both sides something that will help is trying to stay low and keep your weight forward which helps the balance and control, on the backhand side try to keep your left arm down and just hold it tot your side for balance, this will help stop the ballerina stuff going on ha! On the backhand in particular but with both sides, if you can try to stay loose with the arm and body and be a bit more relaxed it will help your recovery and movement a lot, right now sometimes the shots are a bit jerky and not smooth, you have a bit more time than you think so try to focus on a smooth and relaxed action because your technique is nice just needs to be more relaxed.

Lastly on backhand side try not to put your right foot in front, this makes recovery difficult and also had to then move across and play forehand. These are the main areas to focus on for now, but like I said I think your level is very impressive just playing for less than a year, it’s definitely an addictive sport! Keep up the good work and any other questions on this just let me know 🙂

Cheers, Tom
