Hey coach….While looping on FH and BH against heavy backspins, does one need to use the middle finger more in order to create more spin and arc on the loop shot (recently saw a YT video teaching it) ? Also while serving backspin, does use of the middle finger help create more backspin on the ball ?

Also, is the index finger used to create forward motion on FH/BH topspins and middle finger used to create more arc on the ball while looping on FH/BH shots ??

Hey Varun, I’ve never heard of the middle finger being used to create spin and arc on the ball, the spin mostly comes from the wrist acceleration. The fingers are use to help the feeling of being in contact with the rubber and to get good brushing contact on the ball. Sometimes when players grip the bat too tight they have the feeling it’s hard to get spin, this is because it should be relaxed and loose. The index finger and thumb are the part that is always in contact with the rubber so these should almost feel like they are pinching together and squeezing slightly on the contact when you are trying to generate spin. Any other questions on this topic just let me know. Tom 🙂
