push-or-attack
Hi D and T. You’ve touched on shot selection before, but I’d like to get it straight in my head. I realize you should try and attack deep balls, serve or rally, if possible. My hesitation comes in short or mid court balls. I tend to think of pushing as a wasted shot, but of course it isn’t if you direct it well or push fast, which I usually don’t. So when is a push optimal and when should you flick? Do you find pushing is easier to place and use the width of the table than flicks? Thanks.
Hey Slicepong!
Yes you’re spot on about deep balls and open etc. I can understand the hesitation on half long or mid court balls like you said, definitely pushing doesn’t have to be a wasted shot if you are aggressive with it and go for good placement, maybe take a look at this video for more info on that area: https://tabletennisdailyacademy.com/videos/how-to-make-your-long-push-more-effective/
I would say the flick is a good choice if the ball is slightly higher and you are confident of controlling the spin and being able to play a positive shot to put your opponents under pressure, otherwise a good quality push would be good.
I think most players would say they find pushes easier to control direction, although now the backhand banana flick that many players use is great for creating a lot of spin and therefore control in the direction. I’d suggest getting really confident pushing with better quality and direction and then gradually add in more flicks as and when you feel ready.
As usual Tom, great advice. I am rushing. For example, I’m trying to hit great topspin before I’ve mastered the drive. I will try to be patient. Thanks for the sage tips. I can’t believe I missed the long push video. I look forward to it.
No problem Slicepong, it’s easily done but your doing the right things trying to work on certain weaknesses in your game and it will pay off! Enjoy the video and. Atch you soon.
