Coach CornerMatch playreturning-slow- deep-heavy-spin

Hi Tom and Dan. Returning deep, heavy spin is surprisingly difficult at the club level. If you bunt block, it flies off the table. Do you think an aggressive, or at least forceful, flat counterspin is the best response? Thanks.

Hi Slicepong, yes agreed this is something we see many players have difficulty with. Usually a more controlled counter topspin which isn’t too flat is the best way, the problem is if you hit the ball to flat against a heavy soin shot the soin reacts off the bat a lot more making it very hit and miss. However if you can apply your own topspin to the ball it counteracts the soin already on the ball slightly.

Or alternatively if you do want to block these types of shots it usually needs to be a slightly more positive and punchy type block, with these shots I think the timing is key, to really get the ball at the highest point and push forward and slightly downwards into the ball, of course depending on the amount and direction of spin. I hope that makes sense and any questions on that let us know ?
