Right foot on FH open up
Hello, I’m wondering about the right foot position for the FH open up on receive or third ball. I put my right foot under the table for push and flip and now i even do it to loop the first backspin ball as it is not a very long ball. Should i aim to be more often with the right foot behind in order to have good balance/power in the open up or is it normal to do this shot with the right foot in front ? I’m especially wondering because i go to the FH side with moving my right foot forward
Hey Wister!
That’s a really good point you’ve brought up there, as you rightly said you need to step forward with your right foot under the table when playing a push or flick to get your head and body close to the ball. When playing an open up however its important to not have your right foot too far forward as this can restrict rotation in the body meaning its more difficult to generate spin and power.
So ideally as you are preparing for the shot the right foot should still be slightly behind to allow you to rotate and make use of the body power. It is quite common that when the ball isn’t that long when going for a forehand topspin that the right foot will come forward and end up slightly in front when finishing the shot, this is fine as long as you can recover quick enough and get the right foot slightly behind again for the next ball. It’s important that you are not lunging forward with the right foot too far, but if you are rotating the body and using the legs well in the shot still and the right foot ends up slightly in front on this type of shot it’s nothing to worry about 🙂
Hope that’s clear enough for you, any doubts or more information you need, let us know!
Thanks for your answer, it’s clear to me. perfect 🙂
