Coach CornerServe and Receiveserving-short-or-half-long
Slicepong asked 5 years ago

Gentlemen. I know you aim for your white line if serving long and in the backspin vid you said you should aim  to your mid court for a short serve.  Is the mid court also the aim point for half long serves, with a bit more follow thru?  A rule or does this just  make the serves easier? Do you sometimes mix it up by hitting near your white line to serve short or half long?. I realize it takes amazing touch to do this consistently, but it seems to telegraph that a short serve is coming.

Hey Slicepong,

Yes you’re right there, and it depends from person to person. Find out what you feel most comfortable with. I agree having more follow through helps with serving half long. I would say to serve consistency half long well, serve and land the ball just after the mid point of the table, you will get depth and ease. If you serve near your white line you will serve in the net often without good touch and feel.

Great you’re thinking about this and working on these serves, it will make a big difference long term 🙂
