Hi,
I have a question regarding tactics in matches.
I’m interested to know if you should  put more emphasis on taking away the opponents strength and stopping how they want to play or do you put more emphasis on getting your own strength into the game first.

I hope that makes sense..

Thanks ,
Mark

Hi Mark,
This is a really good question, I definitely think the best way is to firstly focus on your own game, what you do well and how to play to your strengths. Then secondly look at your opponents and how to limit their strengths and finding their weakness in tactical play. It can be easy to focus to much on your opponents and then neglect your own game so thats why I think this way is best.

Of course you need to adjust your game for each opponent and use different tactics but if you can firstly get your strengths going well doing that will be much easier. Many players over think about their opponents and forget they need to play in a style and use tactics which fits your game best.
Hope thats helpful!

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the quick reply and excellent advice as always.

You’ve confirmed what I thought and what I’ve been trying to do with my game. I’ve only started to think more tactically this season as last season was my first season. So many people down my club are just focused on winning at all cost where I’m trying to focus on improvement for the long term.

No problem at all, yes you’ve definitely got the right mindset of looking to improve rather than only being focused on winning, because in the long term you will get better results!
