Coach CornerTechniquesThe Role of Sidespin During Play
Resznotes asked 5 years ago

Hi all, I was wondering when, besides on a serve or a push, that side spin can be effectively used during the course of a match? Specifically, Is it wise or is it foolish to add some sidespin to my topspin when returning a topspin ball from my opponent? I don’t think I’ve noticed that topic being addressed in the videos. Someone in our club seems to do that quite effectively with his forehand. The ball kicks to the side after it hits the table and can be very deceptive. What do you think?

Hi Sue,

I know exactly what you mean, I would say that sometimes side spin can be useful like in the situation you mentioned ding a hook so it kicks away from the opponent when it lands on the table. However I would definitely say that you shouldn’t use this all the time or too often as by adding side spin you will lose out on power and control etc, so it’s a shot that can be useful in certain situations in a match for sure for example of the opponent is out of position adding a slight hook or fade side spin to the ball to get the ball kicking away from them even more.

Generally I would say a well placed standard topspin shot is enough most of the time but some players can add a bit of side spin to good effect, so experiment and see how you find using it now and then and if you feel confident doing it.

Good points, Tom. Thanks for your insight. I especially like your point of watching the other player and where he/she is at the table. A bit of sidespin now and then not only places an extra challenge for a player out of position, but it also keeps them from getting too complacent, thinking they always know where my next shot is going.
