Coach CornerTechniquesthird-ball-attack
Resznotes asked 2 weeks ago

Hi, Dan and Tom. My question is a basic one, but it has me a bit confused. Let’s say that your opponent misreads your topspin serve, pushes the ball back, and the ball pops up on your side of the table. So the ball is high, but there is some backspin on the ball. It should be an easy hit. Can you describe your contact on the ball so that you get a good offensive attack without plowing the ball into the net or off the table? Is it the same stroke as against a low backspin ball, or do you alter your hit because the ball is bouncing high?
Thanks,
Resznotes

Hey Resznotes, I know a few people that struggle with this type of ball when it pops up high. It is the same technique as playing an open up on a low backspin ball more or less, but you just need to adjust to a more forward action with less upward brush, many people when the ball pops up high end up hitting too flat and this is where the b all can go long or into the net. So it’s important to keep some topspin on the shot even when it is high, just think brushing forwards rather than brushing upwards. Thanks, Dan
