Hi, Tom and Dan,
In a video on the basics we see Dan taking a forehand, then taking a quick hop to the left when the next ball comes to him down the middle of the table. It looks effortless, and his movement allows him to take that second ball with his forehand. My question is whether it saves time to move to the middle of the table and take that next ball with the forehand, or whether it depends on the preference of the person hitting? So, if I prefer backhand, should I just take that second ball with my backhand, or would I save time by a quick (I wish) hop to my left and taking that second ball with a forehand stroke?
Thanks a million,
Resznotes

Hey Resznotes, it’s always better to play a forehand from the middle of the table where possible because the movement is more economical and you will often end up out of position if you play a backhand from the middle. Of course sometimes you get caught out and end up having to play a backhand there but most of the time it’s better to improve the footwork and movement and get into position to play your forehand there. It’s just working on this hop that Dan does as you said.

Great answer, Tom. Thanks! There’s a lot of wisdom in the “basics” videos, and I recommend that players check those out for improvements in their game.
