Coach CornerWhat to do when my open-up shot is being countered?
darion888 asked 2 years ago

Hello guys,
so normally my open ups of a backspin ball are quite spinny and people make a lot of mistakes while trying to counter them (it usually either goes into the net or away from the table) . But sometimes they manage to counter it or punch it into place which is uncomfortable for me. What should I do in such situation?

Hey! I think normally when people van punch or counter attack them it’s when the ball lands to short in the table. So to help stop this try to make sure you are getting the ball deep and near the white line of possible, this makes it much harder for them to counter or punch at you.
If they do manage to counter into a difficult position the best shot is to try to move well and spin the ball back in. This isn’t always easy but if you can get a lot of spin it will give you the safety and the control to stay in the point. You can always just try to block it back into a good position if you don’t have time as well. This sometimes can get you out of trouble to! Dan 🙂

Yeah, thanks for the great tips. But to make a nice and difficult spin against backspin for the opponent is it better to play a more forward stroke with good acceleration and explosiveness starting from legs and taking the ball at the top of the bounce? Of course variety is the key as you guys had mentioned in lots of videos but personally I find slow and spinny topspin a little bit less of effective since it can be sometimes aggressively countered.
