Coach CornerMatch playWhen should i Play topspins with more Spin and when with speed
Gabriel Kozakevych asked 3 weeks ago

Hi so during rallies in table tennis i have a big struggle to identify when do i should Play my Topspins more with Speed or with Spin. The think Is i really like to play with Speed but i have the feeling that sometimes i stay Close to the table and the ball Is coming from my opponent either half Long or short than i play in with much speed for example a Backhand topspin but afterwards my opponent just counter topspin in my deep Backhand and i am mostly late afterwards. Can you generally give me a advice when i should Play my Topspins on No Spin Balls or from the topspin of my opponents with Speed Back or with Spin. Because If its half Long i think i also should wait Till the ball is coming near to my body and than either Play with Spin or with Speed. So to make my question shorter as its already very Long my thoughts were that If the ball Is coming half Long and with medium height i should step in and Play with Speed maybe here its also even better to wait longer and Play It with Spin and for Low half Long Balls its likely than for Sure Play It with Spin ? On short Balls where i can not wait till they come to my Body its generally better to Play with Speed and recover fast back or Play with Spin and placement and recover Back. And also when are there Situations If the ball IS coming Long with topspin or No Spin where i should either Play with Speed or with Spin. So my fitness IS generally fine but still i am Not the fastest Person but also not slow. Can you please give me here a guidline because its difficult to identify this on my own i still not understand it ?

Hey Gabriel. so the thing in table tennis is that every ball is different and every situation is different so it is very individual each time what type of shot you should play at what time. But what I would say is that if you feel you are struggling with recovery then it’s better to slow down a bit and go for more spin to allow you to have a bit more time to recover and keep consistent. If you play with a lot of speed of course the ball will often come back quicker and you can feel rushed or out of position. When the ball has less spin then usually you’ll be able to play a bit faster and stronger, but when you do it’s important not to hit into an easy position for the opponent, try to find the middle or a wide angle.
