Coach Cornerwould-you-recommend-training-with-a-good-robot-as-well-as-with-human-mates

It is sometimes difficult to find another player who is willing to say throw 50 easy balls to you with back spin, so that you can top spin them (this is just an example, any other scenario could be there). In that case, isn’t it useful to train with a robot? And I assume one has gotten down all the basics correctly.

Hey Makis,

Thanks for your question and a great question indeed, we get asked this one quite often. Yes I think you can use a robot to improve your game. Robots definitely help with improving footwork and fitness and understanding weight transfer in your strokes.

What I would say is that a robot will never be a replacement for a “Real” human practice partner, this is simply because a human will never be able to put the ball in the exact same place and spin each time. This means you’re always having to adjust your angle etc which develops your game. On the other hand a robot makes things very repetitive so from a developmental point of view its not completely realistic.

That’s not to say there aren’t some great uses for a robot, such as getting the same ball in the same spot every time to really focus on getting the technique and movement of your shots right.

I would make use of your time doing serve practice, serve practice is a fantastic way to improve your game, develop the feel for different spins etc. If you can get someone to feed you multi ball to that would be great. Multi ball can be fed by all levels of players once they have learned the basics of it.

A combination of the robot, multi ball and serve practice will really help improve your game.

Hope this helps 🙂

Good solid advice there Dan!

Can you please elaborate a bit on how to develop the feel for different spins?

Thanks
